Chapter Sixteen

Ahot shower, along with clean clothes and armor, made a different person. I didn’t go to bed, instead I headed to the mess hall to get some actual food. Living off rations was only tolerable for so long, and I would not lie to myself about it. I had eaten nutritional paste, after all, so the rations weren’t that bad, but if I could get a hot meal, I would.

The mess wasn’t too busy since it was a little early for lunch, but there were a few people grabbing either a late dinner or an early mid-day meal. The hot food line had pasta with a sauce, along with garlic bread. My mouth watered, and I gladly took a plate, along with water to drink.

A few people at tables glanced up, but I headed to an empty one to eat in peace. Sitting down, I dug into my food. It was warm, slightly spicy, and better than anything I had eaten in the past two days. Then again, I’d somehow lost 3 weeks while in a crystal, so I had to admit it was better than the nothing I’d eaten for most of the past three weeks. I still couldn’t wrap my head around the missing time, though. I should be a lot more tired, hungry and thirsty than I was.

I tried to eat slowly, savoring the food, but I lost that battle quickly and just inhaled it instead. It was only a couple of minutes before my plate was empty.

“You must have been hungry,” said Caleb. He sat down at my table across from me, and I noticed Hex was following along with Finn. Hex sat next to me while Finn sat next to Caleb.

“Just a bit,” I said with a smile.

He placed his slice of garlic bread on my tray. “I’m not a fan, and you need this more than I do.”

I didn’t hesitate before taking a bite. “How’re things going? Any progress?” I asked after swallowing.

Finn answered first. “We think we know how to solve it with an older model. The ones without a pilot seat will be harder, but Hex is feeling his way around the controls.”

“You mean Randy’s ship,” I added, making sure I understood what Finn meant by an older model.

Finn nodded. “I wish it was here, or we could get there. It would speed this up substantially.”

My gaze went to Caleb. “Don’t look at me. My land shuttle could get us there, but it would take weeks.” He frowned. “I’ve been trying to figure out my piloting skills using a shuttle, but it hasn’t clicked yet.”

“Still, it sounds like you guys have made progress,” I said after swallowing a bite of the garlic bread.

Hex hadn’t spoken, and he looked lost in thought as he ate his food. I nudged him with my elbow. “This would be easier if Al hadn’t taken so much control.” He shook his head.
